Clay Masks

Types of Clay and their Benefits

  1. Kaolin-pH 6 – fine grain, soft clay. Most Kaolin clay is white but does come in other hues. The whiter it is the purer it is. Kaolin has a pH that is the closest to our skin pH. Because of it’s low pH it can be used on any type of skin.
  2. Rose Kaolin-pH 6 – a variety of Kaolin that has a pink hue due to trace minerals like iron oxide, making it gentler and more suitable for sensitive or dry skin compared to standard kaolin clay (white) which is slightly more absorbent. Rose Kaolin offers a softer feel than even standard Kaolin.
  1. Purple Brazilian-pH 6 –a Kaolin clay mined in Brazil and has a purple hue due to minerals. Generally considered slightly more hydrating and better for dry or sensitive skin compared to standard Kaolin Clay. Ideal for dry, sensitive, or mature skin due to it’s slightly gentler absorption properties.
  1. Red Moroccan (Rhassoul)-pH 7.5– generally considered better for dry or mature skin due to it’s hydrating properties. It is rich in minerals like silica and magnesium which helps hydrate and soften the skin.6.
  2. Sea Clay (French Green )-pH 7.5- strong oil absorbing clay that is slightly grittier than Kaolin Clay and is more powerful for a deeper cleansing than Kaolin Clay. Ideal for oily and acne prone skin.
  1. Bentonite-pH 8-10 – considered more potent for absorbing oils than Sea Clay. It is best for oily skin. Bentonite is more gritty than Sea Clay. Sea Clay has a richer mineral profile than Bentonite, including magnesium, calcium and iron which can provide additional skin benefits, like detoxification.

Clay Masks for Hair

A clay mask is used on hair to absorb excess oil and impurities from the scalp. It acts as a clarifying treatment, which can be beneficial for people with oily hair, dandruff, or build up from styling products.  Clay’s absorbent properties can help deep clean the scalp and improve hair texture and shine by removing toxins and dirt.

While clay is beneficial to oily hair, using clay masks too frequently can dry out hair.  Different clays have different properties so choose a clay based on your hair needs.

  1. Kaolin– gently cleanses scalp and hair, absorbs excess oil without excessive drying. It is mild enough to be used on sensitive scalps and can contribute to improved hair texture and shine.
  2. Rose Kaolin – considered slightly gentler than regular Kaolin and better suited for sensitive scalps due to it’s milder absorption properties and softer texture. It provides the same cleansing benefits as Kaolin clay but with a lower risk of irritation, making it a good choice for those with delicate scalps or dry hair.
  3. Brazilian Purple – mild like regular Kaolin but has a richer mineral profile, potentially offering slightly more targeted benefits like improved hair texture and volume. It can help maintain the color of dyed hair and add volume as well as thickness. It can also help repair hair cuticles.
  4. Moroccan Red (Rhassoul)- generally considered better for deep cleansing and detoxifying the scalp due to it’s high mineral content. It’s suitable for sensitive scalps and fine hair, providing gentle exfoliation and oil control. Beneficial for oily scalps and can stimulate scalp circulation.
  5. Sea Clay – better suited for oily hair types due to it’s stronger oil absorbing properties. Sea Clay can leave a slightly rougher texture compared to Kaolin Clay. Sea Clay is more potent for removing heavy build up and impurities from oily scalps. It is rich in minerals like magnesium, potassium, and calcium which can help strengthen hair follicles and improve hair quality.
  6. Bentonite – heavy hitter for absorbing oils and adds more volume as well as texture to hair because of it’s strong absorption properties. Bentonite swells with water so it can steal moisture from hair and can leave the hair feeling stripped.

Clay Masks for Skin

Clay masks have been used on skin for thousands of years. Indigenous people used clay to pull impurities out of skin infections and preserve complexions.  It is a powerful skin care product that has stood the test of time.  What are some of the benefits of clay face masks?

  1. Unclogs pores instantly – clogged pores can lead to breakouts. Clay draws out excess oil, dead skin and debris from your pores.
  2. Improve skin texture – clay is porous so it absorbs excess oils, impurities and dead skin from the surface while gently exfoliating, leaving smoother, softer skin.
  3. Neutralizes damaging free radicals – clay has a negative ionic charge when hydrated, so it can effectively bind to positive charged ions (free radicals). Free radicals are known to accelerate signs of aging.
  4. Helps acne- clay binds to free radicals as well as dirt, bacteria, and debris that clog pores and make acne/blemishes worse. Clay works gently without harsh chemicals associated with acne products.
  5. Improves skin tone – removes surface build up by gently exfoliating and helps your skin’s ability to reflect light so your skin appears brighter and more even. Clay also has an energizing effect on the skin!
  6. Absorbs excess oil – if your glands are overactive producing oils during tomes of stress or weather, clay acts as a sponge and absorbs excess oil and impurities with out the use of harsh chemicals.
  7. Gently Cleanses- nature’s perfect cleansing agent. Cleanses without disrupting your skin’s balance. The homeostasis of your skin is disrupted by artificial cleansers.
  8. Supports skin barrier health – clay masks gently clean, decongest pores, and exfoliate skin in a natural and balanced manner. Clay is THE natural alternative to harsh cleansers and exfoliants that can be full of chemicals and disrupt the skins delicate barrier and balance.
